Importance of Character

Character is far more important than money. Those who lost character behind the greed for money or those who earned money but lost character, have actually acquired wealth through sin only. A man of loose character is nowhere respected in spite of his wealth, on the other hand, a man of good moral character is respected everywhere even if financially poor.

It was under the influence of their character and good conduct that our ancient Rishis and Saints commanded tremendous respect from great rulers and kings who stood up from their thrones to welcome such Rishis. Not only in ancient times, even today the saint or a great soul attracts respect of people. Mahatma Gandhi was in very simple attire like a poor man when he met King George V. But it was Gandhiji’s power of truth and strong character that compelled even this mighty ruler of the world, forgetting his own status and tradition, to stand up for welcoming Gandhiji. This was a victory of character over strength and luxury. Many people try to underestimate this event by stating that Gandhiji’s powerful influence came from the trust of large population of India. But what was behind winning the confidence of such a large country? Certainly it was due to Mahatmaji’s sound moral character and glorious conduct which he acquired and developed through renouncing the material wealth. The internal strength and prudence which made Gandhiji a role model of a true leader, should have made him a multimillionaire also, if he wished so; and as other common people would have done. But in that case the wealth without the character would impart the respect which deserved and got from entire world.
